Highlighting Black History Month 2026

The Imbricata Collective Committee at Loggerhead Marinelife Center would like to take a moment to highlight Black History Month by honoring the trailblazers whose work has shaped marine science and conservation. Early pioneers like Roger Arliner Young, the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in zoology, advanced our understanding of marine invertebrates and opened doors for generations to follow. Dr. Ernest Everett Just, a marine biologist, transformed cell biology through his research at marine laboratories, emphasizing the vital role of the environment in development.

Their contributions remind us that innovation thrives when diverse voices lead. As we celebrate Black History Month, we recognize the past, present, and future of Black excellence in marine science and recommit to supporting inclusive pathways for all individuals interested in working in this field for generations to come.

This Black History Month, we would also like to take this opportunity to share some local events you can participate in to celebrate and learn more this month. Palm Beach County honors Black history and culture throughout February with a rich lineup of events celebrating storytelling, art, and community.
